The report “From the Lagoon to the Moon – Exploring the Future of the Space Industry in Veneto,” the first “Quaderno” that will make up a series of publications edited by Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF), was released today.

This is the result of a joint analysis between the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the report that emerged from the “Veneto Space Hub” study highlights how Veneto, thanks to its industrial base, innovative research institutions and a vibrant business community, is well positioned to play a leading role in a global market reaching $508 billion in 2023 and potentially exceeding $1 trillion by 2040. In fact, the paper analyzes the opportunities and potential of the Veneto Region to establish itself as a strategic hub in the Italian and European space economy.

The report highlights the region’s strengths, such as high-tech manufacturing, precision engineering skills and advanced research capabilities. Veneto’s universities, startups and SMEs are driving innovations in strategic sectors such as aerospace components, satellite technologies and cybersecurity. However, the Aerospace and Defense sector currently accounts for a limited portion of regional GDP (€1.1 billion in 2022, or about 0.6 percent), indicating significant room for growth.

By 2040, Veneto’s space sector could contribute €1.5 billion directly to regional GDP, generating a total impact of €4.5 billion and creating 2,400 new skilled jobs (including the induced market). To realize this potential, it is crucial to integrate space industries into a cohesive cluster, supported by targeted government policies, university-business collaborations and international partnerships.

The paper aims to provide some strategic reflections to consolidate Veneto’s role in the space economy, strengthening its competitive positioning and promoting an innovative and sustainable space hub. In a context of increasing relevance of the space economy internationally, these future-oriented strategies provide valuable guidance for regional stakeholders.
