DESCRIPTION:Discussion Panel VSF “Between Two Pressures – Climate Risk and People Flows in Tourist Cities” \n9th September | 6:25 pm \n35°Economic Forum | Karpacz (Poland) \nABSTRACT\nTourism destinations are increasingly exposed to two simultaneous pressures: the effects of climate change and the growing concentration of visitors. \nFlooding\, heatwaves\, drought\, wildfires\, extreme weather events and sea-level rise affect cities and territories with different geographical and economic characteristics. At the same time\, large visitor flows place increasing pressure on mobility\, public spaces\, housing\, waste management\, urban services and local communities. \nAlthough different in nature\, these phenomena raise a common governance challenge: how can destinations understand changing conditions\, anticipate critical thresholds and act before their impacts become unmanageable? \nData\, forecasting systems\, resilient infrastructure and coordinated decision-making can help cities and territories move from emergency response to prevention. The session will explore how climate adaptation\, data-informed decisions and visitor-flow management can be integrated into the governance of tourism destinations\, before addressing the economic\, institutional and insurance implications of increasing climate risks. \nThe discussion will draw on the emblematic case of Venice\, where the MOSE system regulates tidal flows and the analysis of city-user movements supports the understanding and management of pressure on the urban system.
