SUMMARY:Waterproof Venice
DESCRIPTION:The Waterproof Venice exhibition\, which will be inaugurated on May 30 by VSF within the context of the 2024 Salone Nautico\, aims to share\, with citizens and the public\, the projects̀ of the Foundation’s members in the direction of sustainable and integrated development\, of the Venetian territory. \nLocated in the renovated space of Tesa 66 in the Venice Arsenal\, the installation\, which will be on view until October 6\, presents itself as a shared curatorial project through which VSF members present their projects and express their visions for the city of Venice and its metropolitan surroundings. \nVisitors will thus be confronted with a path that exposes the complexities of reality through texts\, images\, renderings and perspectives elaborated by Artificial Intelligence giving way to a series of hypotheses about the Venice of the future\, based on VSF members’ activities and projects for the sustainable and integrated development of the Venetian territory. \nThe entire display\, from graphics to colors to style\, will evoke the magnificence of 12th century Byzantine Venice\, emphasizing the importance of history in shaping the present and imagining the future of Venice. \nThis is a project of VSF\, curated by Jacopo Galli and Marco Marino. \nIn collaboration with the City of Venice\, Iuav and Vela. \nParticipants: Regione del Veneto\, Comune di Venezia\, Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia\, Università Iuav di Venezia\, Accademia delle Belle Arti\, Conservatorio di musica Benedetto Marcello\, ConfindustriaVeneto\, Eni\, Assicurazioni Generali\, Almaviva\, Amazon\, Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Settentrionale\, Autostrade per l’Italia\, Concessioni Autostradali Venete\, Edison\, Enfinity Global\, Fincantieri\, Gruppo SAVE\, Infinityhub\, Sanlorenzo\, Umana.

DESCRIPTION:“The paradigm of Venice: valuable lessons for sea level rise adaptation and disaster risk reduction” is the title of the side event organized by the Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) at the Italian Pavilion at COP29 in Baku. \nThe event aims to highlight Venice’s adaptation experience as a global laboratory of sustainability and resilience\, focused on addressing environmental and cultural heritage conservation issues\, offering concrete insights and solutions that can be adopted internationally. The central question guiding the discussion will be: “What lessons from Venice’s adaptation model can be shared with other coastal cities to contribute to the implementation of global agendas?” \nThis initiative intends to present the best practices developed in Venice and stimulate constructive dialogue with the international community\, strengthening Italy’s position as a hub for innovative climate adaptation solutions\, particularly in the field of environmental and cultural heritage protection. The initiative aims to showcase the unique multi-stakeholder cooperation developed in Venice and outline the roadmap of activities that will ensure a resilient and sustainable future for the city. \nThis model brings together partners with different goals—from education and research to international cooperation and territorial governance—creating an ecosystem of integrated solutions. SUMMARY:The Evolution of Clean Hydrogen - Perspectives from production to use in mobility and industry
DESCRIPTION:The transition to a climate-neutral economy requires systemic action in the energy and mobility sectors. In this context\, clean hydrogen (H2) is a decisive factor in the decarbonization of heavy transport and industry\, the integration of renewable sources\, and strengthening cooperation between territories. \n“The Evolution of Clean Hydrogen. Perspectives from production to use in mobility and industry” is the final event of the European project H2MA – Green Hydrogen Mobility for Alpine Region Transportation\, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Alpine Space Program. H2MA aims to accelerate the development of hydrogen infrastructure for public transport and freight. Among the results achieved are a shared tool for planning hydrogen refueling networks\, pilot strategies for developing H2 corridors\, a Green H2 Route Masterplan\, and Roadmaps for H2 Valleys to guide investments\, financing\, and synergies. These outcomes pave the way for sustainable hydrogen mobility that is truly extended to the entire Alpine area. \nThe conference\, co-organized by Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) in collaboration with Codognotto and included in the official program of Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025\, offers a forum for institutions\, businesses\, and research centers to share experiences\, findings\, and new opportunities for the large-scale dissemination of hydrogen applications in Europe and the Alpine region. \nThe event program includes a session organized by VSF on ongoing initiatives in the Venice and Veneto areas\, with contributions from institutions\, operators\, and businesses. Developments in hydrogen production and pipeline infrastructure\, transport solutions\, and sustainable mobility will be presented\, along with projects for the port and airport of Venice related to sustainable logistics. DESCRIPTION:“Venice as a dual model for climate adaptation – Infrastructure meets nature-based learning” is the title of the side event organised by Venice Sustainability Foundation at the Italian Pavilion “Made for Our Future” at COP30 in Belém\, Brazil. \nThe event presents Venice as a dual model of climate adaptation\, where advanced engineering solutions combine with the resilience of nature\, while integrating a widespread system of education and continuous learning. \nThe MOSE system – an integrated complex of works inside and outside the lagoon – is proof of how large-scale infrastructure and nature-based solutions (NBS) can work together. The morphological restoration of the lagoon\, plant-based purification systems (phytoremediation)\, and ecological corridors have\, in fact\, enhanced the effectiveness and adaptive capacity of MOSE in the long term\, contributing to the restoration of the lagoon’s balance. \nAt the same time\, the City Campus project – a VSF thematic area dedicated to developing the knowledge economy in Venice – aims to transform Venice into a veritable open-air laboratory\, where researchers\, institutions\, and citizens collaborate to test local climate adaptation strategies through field learning. \nVenice thus positions itself as a place that is both a barrier and a laboratory against the climate crisis.\nThis event aims to share replicable methodologies and governance models that can transform vulnerable coastal areas into campuses for resilience education\, offering a sustainable adaptation model that is scalable globally and paving the way for a more resilient and inclusive urban future. \nThe initiative is organized by VSF with CORILA\, Iuav University of Venice (UNESCO Chair on Heritage and Urban Regeneration)\, the University of Southern Denmark (SDU\, UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience)\, and in collaboration with Climate Policy Initiative (CPI)\, SAVE Spa\, and Thetis Spa. \nThe programme is available at the following link.

SUMMARY:Venice\, resilience\, cultural heritage: the international conference and closing event of "Intelligent Venice"
DESCRIPTION:Rising sea levels are a global phenomenon that endangers not only the environment and the economy\, but also the very identity of coastal communities. Coastal areas are among the most densely populated regions on the planet\, hosting 11 of the world’s 15 largest megacities. Over 600 million people currently reside less than 10 metres above sea level\, a number that is projected to double by the end of the 21st century. These territories\, which serve as nerve centers for many human activities\, require adaptation strategies.  \nIn this scenario\, Venice appears as an international model of resilience.  \nAs a UNESCO World Heritage Site\, Venice has already experienced the consequences of sea level rise and is currently developing innovative solutions to protect its cultural heritage. For these reasons\, it has been recognised as a Resilience Hub as part of the “Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030)” campaign promoted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).  \nHow\, then\, can we safeguard our cultural heritage\, both tangible and intangible\, in the face of this challenge? How can we ensure the resilience of coastal cities while preserving the link between urbs (the physical city) and civitas (the community)? \nAligned  with the programme of Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025\, which is dedicated to the balance between urbs and civitas\, Venice Sustainability Foundation is organising a day of reflection and international dialogue on the theme of resilience. \nThe event is structured in two parts: \n1. SUMMARY:Smart and Sustainable Tourism: Impacts\, Approaches\, Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The importance of tourism stems from its sheer scale: international tourism alone moves 1.5 billion people annually\, generating over 2 trillion dollars and contributing to the employment of one in ten workers globally.  \nOther factors also contribute to its importance\, alongside these large numbers and growth. The cross-cutting nature of the economic\, environmental\, and socio-cultural impacts in places visited by tourists leads to infrastructure development\, enhancement\, cultural production and exchange\, the multifunctionality of businesses\, and the creation of new market outlets for local products. \nIn this perspective\, Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025 “Urbs et Civitas” will host the international conference “Smart and Sustainable Tourism. Impacts\, Approaches\, Solutions”\, an initiative organised by VSF in collaboration with the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority – Ports of Venice and Chioggia as part of the ADRIJOROUTES Project funded by the European Interreg Italy-Croatia programme. The meeting will provide an opportunity to hear about the current state of tourism and its future prospects\, as well as a discussion on innovative approaches and solutions for smart and sustainable tourism\, with a focus on global urban areas. With this in mind\, the urbs expands and contracts according to the presence of the civitas\, which is composed not only of residents but also of workers\, students\, and visitors themselves. \nCities are privileged centres of innovation\, connectivity\, skills\, and density\, as well as destinations for tourist flows concentrated in time and space. They therefore act as laboratories for tourism innovation\, integrating sustainability\, inclusion\, technology\, and participation. Cities such as Venice\, the heart of VSF’s activities\, act as catalysts for processes that facilitate technical\, economic\, and social development towards smart and sustainable tourist destinations. \nThe conference will consist of three sessions:  \n\nSession I: Impacts. Looking at the world through the lens of tourism. \nSession II: Approaches. Cities as laboratories for smart\, innovative\, and sustainable tourism.\nSession III: Solutions. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Venice Climate Week 2026 – Planet Aqua\, Planet Peace\, of which Venice Sustainability Foundation is a partner\, VSF promotes and organizes the workshop “Business under pressure: a crisis simulation workshop for SMEs”\, scheduled for Friday\, June 5\, 2026\, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM\, at Sala due Colonne – Tolentini – Università Iuav di Venezia.  \nVenice Climate Week 2026\, to be held in Venice from June 3 to 8\, focuses on water as a decisive element for the future of cities\, territories\, and economic systems\, from an adaptation\, resilience\, and international cooperation perspective. \nWithin this framework\, the workshop will provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion and exchange on how small and medium-sized enterprises can strengthen their ability to respond to climate emergencies\, infrastructure disruptions\, and sudden crises through preparedness tools\, business continuity planning\, and risk assessment. \nThrough a simulation exercise inspired by water-related risks in the Venetian context\, the meeting will explore the role that businesses\, institutions\, and local actors can play together in improving business continuity and contributing to the development of more resilient territorial systems. \nThe workshop is aimed at SMEs\, merchants\, entrepreneurs\, hospitality facilities\, museums\, cultural operators\, professionals\, technical experts\, and local stakeholders interested in the topics of resilience\, business continuity\, and adaptation to climate risks. \nSpeakers will include Yigyeong Oh\, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Implementation Expert at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) – Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (ROECA)\, and Ignasi Fontanals\, SME Resilience & City Ecosystems Consultant at UNDRR and founder of Resilient Systems Hub. \nThe initiative is organized with the support of Università Iuav di Venezia and Alilaguna\, in collaboration with institutional partners United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030). \nThe workshop will be conducted in English.\n\nParticipation is free of charge\, subject to registration\, and until seats are filled: REGISTRATION FORM.

DESCRIPTION:Discussion Panel VSF “Between Two Pressures – Climate Risk and People Flows in Tourist Cities” \n9th September | 6:25 pm \n35°Economic Forum | Karpacz (Poland) \nABSTRACT\nTourism destinations are increasingly exposed to two simultaneous pressures: the effects of climate change and the growing concentration of visitors. \nFlooding\, heatwaves\, drought\, wildfires\, extreme weather events and sea-level rise affect cities and territories with different geographical and economic characteristics. At the same time\, large visitor flows place increasing pressure on mobility\, public spaces\, housing\, waste management\, urban services and local communities. \nAlthough different in nature\, these phenomena raise a common governance challenge: how can destinations understand changing conditions\, anticipate critical thresholds and act before their impacts become unmanageable? \nData\, forecasting systems\, resilient infrastructure and coordinated decision-making can help cities and territories move from emergency response to prevention. The session will explore how climate adaptation\, data-informed decisions and visitor-flow management can be integrated into the governance of tourism destinations\, before addressing the economic\, institutional and insurance implications of increasing climate risks. \nThe discussion will draw on the emblematic case of Venice\, where the MOSE system regulates tidal flows and the analysis of city-user movements supports the understanding and management of pressure on the urban system.
