SUMMARY:From protection to innovation: infrastructure investments and sustainable revitalization plans for Venice in the MOSE era
DESCRIPTION:The engineering works system MOSE\, thanks to its ability to protect Venice from rising seas\, has acted as an enabling factor for the development of the metropolitan area\, allowing it to attract investment and initiate key infrastructural renewal works\, thus meeting the city’s needs for integrated sustainability. \nThe Venice Metropolitan area\, together with Padua\, is a key node in the TEN-T network\, which in the context of the European Green Deal aims to create a system of sustainable land\, sea and air infrastructures interconnected on a continental scale. This renewal starts from a shared and collaborative vision between public and private actors that is fundamental to the redevelopment of the Metropolitan City of Venice. Doing so can promote economic development\, social cohesion and the preservation of its valuable historical and human heritage. \nTo trace the state-of-the-art of project activities\, the conference will showcase the most relevant innovative strategies and projects aimed at the economic and social revitalization of Venice in the fields of transportation infrastructure\, energy and services useful for integrated urban regeneration. SUMMARY:The Future of Decentralization in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:The 9th European Congress of Local Governments: “The Future of Decentralization in a Changing World”\, organized by Foundation Institute for Eastern Studies\, and of which Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) is an institutional partner\, aims to serve as a platform for the exchange of views and a meeting place for leaders of local governments\, representatives of regional elites\, members of the state administration\, NGOs and business. \nOn the 4th and 5th of March\, in Mikołajki\, Poland\, a variety of topics were covered: from the problems of contemporary urban planning and mechanisms of city and regional development\, to debates around investment financing\, city management\, environmental protection\, and health policy. In particular\, on the 5th of March from 10:10 to 11:10\, the panel “Climate Crisis: Global Challenges\, Local Solutions”\, dedicated to the main challenges posed by climate change and innovative local approaches to address them\, took place. The impacts of the climate crisis are intensifying day by day\, and the panel explored the ways in which local governors can help build a sustainable future. Alessandro Costa\, Director General of the VSF\, made a speech entitled “Waterproof Venice: defending a World Cultural Heritage from sea level rise”. DESCRIPTION:The circular economy is a key approach to leading society toward sustainable land management through a more efficient use of resources\, an aspect that is of central relevance to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda goals. SUMMARY:Resilient Cultural Heritage: protect cultural heritage from sea level rise
DESCRIPTION:In light of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction\, it is crucial to address the challenges posed by rising sea levels and extreme meteorological events\, which are expected to increase in frequency. Even with efforts to decarbonize our economies\, the sea level is projected to rise for the next two centuries\, putting at risk over 250 million people living in coastal areas less than 2 meters above sea level. Among the vulnerable sites are numerous cultural heritage locations situated in low-lying coastal regions\, including 49 UNESCO World Heritage sites across the Mediterranean. \nMoreover\, recent data reveals that approximately 21% of the world’s Heritage sites are susceptible to river floods. Venice\, as one of the cities engaged in the UNDRR campaign “Making Cities Resilient\,” became a role model for Cultural Heritage protection and was acknowledged as such in 2011. The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai\, Japan\, held in 2015\, notably integrated the safeguarding of Cultural Heritage within its adopted Framework. \nAs we approach the eighth year since that conference\, the upcoming event in Venice aims to assess the progress and effects of implemented strategies\, particularly focusing on the outcomes achieved in Venice itself. Furthermore\, the conference intends to renew urgent attention towards the protection of Cultural Heritage\, strengthening of early warning systems\, considering the most recent scientific data on the impacts of climate change. It is essential to confront these challenges and foster a collective effort to preserve and protect our shared cultural legacies in the face of a changing climate. \nThe conference is organised by VSF\, in collaboration with CORILA\, The European House – Ambrosetti\, Consorzio Venezia Nuova and Vela\, with the support of Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Procuratoria di San Marco\, as part of the “Biennale della Sostenibilità – The MOSE Era”\, a series of initiatives promoted by VSF aimed at establishing Venice as a global reference point in climate change adaptation strategies.

DESCRIPTION:The urban transformation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, driven by scientific and technological progress\, shaped European cities. This metamorphosis involved all aspects of city life\, from infrastructure to mobility\, from social services to economics\, from sanitation to residency. Even Venice\, with its unique configuration\, was not immune to these transformations\, which gave birth to a modern city in an original way\, while maintaining its distinctive characteristics and peculiarities. \nThe exhibition\, “Venice and Science: Two Centuries of Sustainability in the City of Venice\,” organized by the Istituto Veneto di Lettere\, Scienze ed Arti together with the Fondazione Venezia Capitale Mondiale della Sostenibilità / Venice Sustainability Foundation within the framework of the Biennale della Sostenibilità 2023 – L’Era del MOSE\, offers a compelling account of how scientific and technological progress has sought to place itself at the service of the city\, ensuring that it was not excluded from the modernization process and thus rethinking the horizons of its social and cultural life.\nMore than 80 pieces are on display\, about 300 of them can be explored through an immersive installation; a real journey through documents: engravings\, drawings\, photographs\, maps\, models\, measuring instruments and projects-sometimes put into action\, sometimes remaining only imagined or partially realized. \nThere are many curiosities unknown to most that\, thanks to a careful work of collection and analysis of a great deal of material by the Istituto Veneto di Lettere\, Scienze ed Arti\, come out of the archives and are offered to the public as evidence of a strong push for change that represents an invitation to rethink a period for Venice of revival and projection towards a future of great creativity and modernization. \nThe exhibition will be open daily from Oct. 7 to Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Palazzo Loredan\, Venice. SUMMARY:Balancing Port development and Lagoon preservation: achieving a sustainable equilibrium is already possible
DESCRIPTION:On September 21\, 2023\, the event “Balancing Port Development and Lagoon Preservation: achieving a Sustainable Equilibrium is already possible\,” a side event of the Bienniale della Sostenibilità 2023 – The MOSE era\, was held\, during which the results of the study “Channeling the Green Deal for Venice\,” a project of the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority\, were presented. \nThe project addresses the problem of the limited nautical accessibility to the ports of Venice and Chioggia by seeking scientific and operational solutions respecting the natural constraints\, the hydrodynamic balance of the lagoon\, the local water traffic\, and the MoSE mobile dyke system. These specificities required studies conducted with an innovative approach that can be replicated in other contexts\, integrating for the first time in Italy hydrodynamic and navigation simulation models in an iterative manner. \nDuring the event\, it was recounted how the evidence and technical-scientific data collected during the studies showed how it is already possible\, through targeted management and infrastructural solutions\, to increase port performance in terms of operability and navigation safety\, while reducing the effects of the transit of ships in the Malamocco-Marghera canal by more than 50% of the annual volume of sediment eroded by ship traffic. \nTo view the event program click here.

In the “Le stanze della fotografia” space\, on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice\, from August 30\, 2023 to January 7\, 2024\, will take place the exhibition curated by Denis Curti and Annalisa D’Angelo. \nThe set of shots by the eleven-time World Press Photo Award winner is constructed as a true anthology that touches the themes of sustainability\, highlighting the complex relationship between man and his environment. \nThe three hundred moments immortalized by Paolo Pellegrin include an unpublished reportage on Ukraine\, as well as recounting the photographer’s field work: from Gaza to Beirut\, but also Rome\, Japan\, America\, climate change in Namibia\, Iceland and Greenland.

DESCRIPTION:MOSE as a worldwide best practice for protecting cities from rising seas and tidal phenomena is the theme of the meeting opening the Sustainability Biennial.
