SUMMARY:Smart and Sustainable Tourism: Impacts\, Approaches\, Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The importance of tourism stems from its sheer scale: international tourism alone moves 1.5 billion people annually\, generating over 2 trillion dollars and contributing to the employment of one in ten workers globally. \nOther factors also contribute to its importance\, alongside these large numbers and growth. The cross-cutting nature of the economic\, environmental\, and socio-cultural impacts in places visited by tourists leads to infrastructure development\, enhancement\, cultural production and exchange\, the multifunctionality of businesses\, and the creation of new market outlets for local products. \nIn this perspective\, Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025 “Urbs et Civitas” will host the international conference “Smart and Sustainable Tourism. Impacts\, Approaches\, Solutions”\, an initiative organised by VSF in collaboration with the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority – Ports of Venice and Chioggia as part of the ADRIJOROUTES Project funded by the European Interreg Italy-Croatia programme. The meeting will provide an opportunity to hear about the current state of tourism and its future prospects\, as well as a discussion on innovative approaches and solutions for smart and sustainable tourism\, with a focus on global urban areas. With this in mind\, the urbs expands and contracts according to the presence of the civitas\, which is composed not only of residents but also of workers\, students\, and visitors themselves. \nCities are privileged centres of innovation\, connectivity\, skills\, and density\, as well as destinations for tourist flows concentrated in time and space. They therefore act as laboratories for tourism innovation\, integrating sustainability\, inclusion\, technology\, and participation. Cities such as Venice\, the heart of VSF’s activities\, act as catalysts for processes that facilitate technical\, economic\, and social development towards smart and sustainable tourist destinations. \nThe conference will consist of three sessions: \n\nSession I: Impacts. Looking at the world through the lens of tourism. \nSession II: Approaches. Cities as laboratories for smart\, innovative\, and sustainable tourism.\nSession III: Solutions. VSF members for smart and sustainable tourism.\n\nThe detailed programme is available at the following link: PROGRAMME \nCONFERENCE MATERIALS\n\nSpeakers’ biographies \nStefano Sisto – Region of Veneto\, Director of the Tourist Planning Organizational Unit\, presentation (ITA)\nDamiano De Marchi (moderator Session I) – VSF\, Project Manager | Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia\, Professor\, presentation (ITA)\nElena Nembrini – ENIT\, Director General | VSF\, Statutory Auditor of the Board of Auditors\, presentation (ITA)\nIoannis Pappas – GSTC\, Regional Director for Europe | European Climate Pact Ambassador | URBACT Lead Expert | European Urban Initiative\, Expert Innovative Actions\, presentation (ENG)\nGuido Licciardi – World Bank\, Senior Operations Officer\n\n \n \n\nCostanza Alesse – NECSTouR\, Project Manager\, presentation (ITA)  \nDamiano De Marchi (moderator Session II) – VSF\, Project Manager | Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia\, Professor\, presentation (ITA)\nDomenico Carretta – City of Turin\, Deputy Mayor for Tourism\, video (ITA)\nKyriaki Boulasidou – Ente Nazionale Ellenico Per il Turismo\, Director\, video (ITA)\nJohannes Lutter – UIV – Urban Innovation Vienna\, Head of International Affairs & Strategic Partnerships\, presentation (ENG)\nJosep Xurigué Camprubí – Barcelona Comerç\, Deputy Director\, presentation (ENG)\nLeonardo Ricci – City of Florence\, Director of Technological Infrastructure Development\, presentation (ITA)\nEmanuele Geri – City of Florence\, Technical IT Manager\, Open Data\, SIT\, presentation (ITA) \nDamiano De Marchi (introduction Session III) – VSF\, Project Manager | Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia\, Professor\, presentation (ITA)\nPaolo Clini (moderator Session III) – Università Politecnica delle Marche\, Director of DhekalosLab IA e Digital Heritage\, presentation (ITA) \nMaria Sol Scanferla – North Adriatic Sea Port Authority\, Promotion\, Communication and Institutional Relations Unit\, Strategic Planning and Development Department\, presentation (ITA)\nAndrea Casadei – Almaviva\, Tourism Practice Manager – SME Culture\, Tourism and Sport\, presentation (ITA)\nSilvia Oliva – VSF\, Coordinator of Project Activities\, presentation (ITA)

SUMMARY:Venice\, resilience\, cultural heritage: the international conference and closing event of "Intelligent Venice"
DESCRIPTION:Rising sea levels are a global phenomenon that endangers not only the environment and the economy\, but also the very identity of coastal communities. Coastal areas are among the most densely populated regions on the planet\, hosting 11 of the world’s 15 largest megacities. Over 600 million people currently reside less than 10 metres above sea level\, a number that is projected to double by the end of the 21st century. These territories\, which serve as nerve centers for many human activities\, require adaptation strategies.  \nIn this scenario\, Venice appears as an international model of resilience.  \nAs a UNESCO World Heritage Site\, Venice has already experienced the consequences of sea level rise and is currently developing innovative solutions to protect its cultural heritage. For these reasons\, it has been recognised as a Resilience Hub as part of the “Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030)” campaign promoted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).  \nHow\, then\, can we safeguard our cultural heritage\, both tangible and intangible\, in the face of this challenge? How can we ensure the resilience of coastal cities while preserving the link between urbs (the physical city) and civitas (the community)? \nAligned  with the programme of Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025\, which is dedicated to the balance between urbs and civitas\, Venice Sustainability Foundation is organising a day of reflection and international dialogue on the theme of resilience. \nThe event is structured in two parts: \n1. International conference “Coastal cities\, climate resilience and cultural heritage protection”\n9.30 am – 1.30 pm (admission from 9.00 am)\, Teatro Piccolo Arsenale \nThis meeting\, organised by VSF in collaboration with UNDRR\, aims to create a space for discussion among coastal cities worldwide\, to develop concrete initiatives and foster a lasting network of relationships.\nThe event aims to promote constructive dialogue between experts\, public administrators\, and citizens to define adaptation strategies that take into account both the urbs – with its physical vulnerabilities – and the civitas – with its capacity for resilience and its deep connection to the territory.\nAt the end of the conference\, a new publication by VSF will be presented: “History of Venice’s resilience. Economic\, social\, and urban challenges and transformations over the last two centuries” (“Storia della resilienza di Venezia. Sfide e trasformazioni economiche\, sociali e urbanistiche degli ultimi due secoli”\, currently only available in Italian).  \nA light lunch will be served (1.30 pm – 2.30 pm). \n2. Closing event of the exhibition “Intelligent Venice: the oldest city of the future”\, Special Project of Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) for the Biennale Architettura 2025\n2.30 pm – 4 pm\, Tesa dell’Isolotto\, Darsena Grande dell’Arsenale \nThe exhibition tells the story of an extraordinary millenary project\, a history of medieval inventions and contemporary technologies\, of interventions on nature and anthropisation\, of survival and resilience strategies\, through which the city’s ability to survive a hostile environment has unfolded over centuries\, thanks to the constant exercise of intelligence. \nThe program is available at the following link. \nFor information: info@vsf.foundation \nBIOGRAPHIES OF THE CONFERENCE SPEAKERS: link. \nCONFERENCE\nAudio recordings\nLive video\n \nConference materials:\n\nVideo message by Kamal Kishore\, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction\, and Head of UNDRR – LINK\nSpeakers’ biographies – LINK\nFrancesco Musco – Research Director of Università Iuav di Venezia\, President of CORILA and Vice-president of the Center for Studies and Research on Climate Change\, presentation\, LINK\nAugustìn Sànchez-Arcilla – Professor\, Maritime Eng Lab Barcelonatech Univ Pol Catalunya\, presentation\, LINK \nAbdulkadir Shettima – Executive Director of African School of Regulation\, presentation\, LINK\nNatalia Alonso Cano – Chief of UNDRR Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia\, presentation\, LINK  \nMimoun Aalaoul – Geologist\, Mohammed First University\, Nador (Morocco)\, presentation\, LINK\nPaulino Manuel Omoìne – Provincial Director of Territorial Development and Environment Prov. SUMMARY:VSF at COP30 | Venice as a dual model for climate adaptation - Infrastructure meets nature-based learning
DESCRIPTION:“Venice as a dual model for climate adaptation – Infrastructure meets nature-based learning” is the title of the side event organised by Venice Sustainability Foundation at the Italian Pavilion “Made for Our Future” at COP30 in Belém\, Brazil. \nThe event presents Venice as a dual model of climate adaptation\, where advanced engineering solutions combine with the resilience of nature\, while integrating a widespread system of education and continuous learning. \nThe MOSE system – an integrated complex of works inside and outside the lagoon – is proof of how large-scale infrastructure and nature-based solutions (NBS) can work together. The morphological restoration of the lagoon\, plant-based purification systems (phytoremediation)\, and ecological corridors have\, in fact\, enhanced the effectiveness and adaptive capacity of MOSE in the long term\, contributing to the restoration of the lagoon’s balance. \nAt the same time\, the City Campus project – a VSF thematic area dedicated to developing the knowledge economy in Venice – aims to transform Venice into a veritable open-air laboratory\, where researchers\, institutions\, and citizens collaborate to test local climate adaptation strategies through field learning. \nVenice thus positions itself as a place that is both a barrier and a laboratory against the climate crisis.\nThis event aims to share replicable methodologies and governance models that can transform vulnerable coastal areas into campuses for resilience education\, offering a sustainable adaptation model that is scalable globally and paving the way for a more resilient and inclusive urban future. \nThe initiative is organized by VSF with CORILA\, Iuav University of Venice (UNESCO Chair on Heritage and Urban Regeneration)\, the University of Southern Denmark (SDU\, UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience)\, and in collaboration with Climate Policy Initiative (CPI)\, SAVE Spa\, and Thetis Spa. \nThe programme is available at the following link.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Clean Hydrogen - Perspectives from production to use in mobility and industry
DESCRIPTION:The transition to a climate-neutral economy requires systemic action in the energy and mobility sectors. In this context\, clean hydrogen (H2) is a decisive factor in the decarbonization of heavy transport and industry\, the integration of renewable sources\, and strengthening cooperation between territories. \n“The Evolution of Clean Hydrogen. Perspectives from production to use in mobility and industry” is the final event of the European project H2MA – Green Hydrogen Mobility for Alpine Region Transportation\, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Alpine Space Program. H2MA aims to accelerate the development of hydrogen infrastructure for public transport and freight. Among the results achieved are a shared tool for planning hydrogen refueling networks\, pilot strategies for developing H2 corridors\, a Green H2 Route Masterplan\, and Roadmaps for H2 Valleys to guide investments\, financing\, and synergies. These outcomes pave the way for sustainable hydrogen mobility that is truly extended to the entire Alpine area. \nThe conference\, co-organized by Venice Sustainability Foundation (VSF) in collaboration with Codognotto and included in the official program of Biennale della Sostenibilità 2025\, offers a forum for institutions\, businesses\, and research centers to share experiences\, findings\, and new opportunities for the large-scale dissemination of hydrogen applications in Europe and the Alpine region. \nThe event program includes a session organized by VSF on ongoing initiatives in the Venice and Veneto areas\, with contributions from institutions\, operators\, and businesses. Developments in hydrogen production and pipeline infrastructure\, transport solutions\, and sustainable mobility will be presented\, along with projects for the port and airport of Venice related to sustainable logistics. SUMMARY:On the road with the Bank of Italy
DESCRIPTION:The economy and its links to the social and urban fabric are the focus of the side event of the Biennale della sostenibilità 2023 – The Mose era entitled “Sustainability\, Green Transition and Territories” that will take place on November 9 at the Goldoni Theater in Venice. The event\, organized by the Bank of Italy\, represents the Venetian leg of the “Traveling with the Bank of Italy” initiative\, a step-by-step journey across the country to promote financial culture and open a direct dialogue with people\, businesses and institutions. \nThe meeting will analyze green transition and real estate assets. The discussion will focus on the structural characteristics of heritage to understand how policies for transition can influence real estate prices\, household wealth and also reflect on the stability of the banking system that is exposed to this type of activity through land credit. \nVenice is in this regard an emblematic city: the energy efficiency of housing must be combined with landscape protection and the regime of constraints imposed on buildings\, for its own protection; moreover\, in its uniqueness\, Venice also represents throughout the urban fabric of its historic center the condition in which\, which more and which less\, most of the historic centers of Italian cities are found. \nFor more information: https://economiapertutti.bancaditalia.it/ext/inviaggio-bi/index.html?com.dotmarketing.htmlpage.language=3 \nTo view the event program (Italian only) click here \nIn order to take part at the event\, it is necessary to complete the form

SUMMARY:Resilient Cultural Heritage: protect cultural heritage from sea level rise
DESCRIPTION:In light of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction\, it is crucial to address the challenges posed by rising sea levels and extreme meteorological events\, which are expected to increase in frequency. Even with efforts to decarbonize our economies\, the sea level is projected to rise for the next two centuries\, putting at risk over 250 million people living in coastal areas less than 2 meters above sea level. Among the vulnerable sites are numerous cultural heritage locations situated in low-lying coastal regions\, including 49 UNESCO World Heritage sites across the Mediterranean. \nMoreover\, recent data reveals that approximately 21% of the world’s Heritage sites are susceptible to river floods. Venice\, as one of the cities engaged in the UNDRR campaign “Making Cities Resilient\,” became a role model for Cultural Heritage protection and was acknowledged as such in 2011. The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai\, Japan\, held in 2015\, notably integrated the safeguarding of Cultural Heritage within its adopted Framework. \nAs we approach the eighth year since that conference\, the upcoming event in Venice aims to assess the progress and effects of implemented strategies\, particularly focusing on the outcomes achieved in Venice itself. Furthermore\, the conference intends to renew urgent attention towards the protection of Cultural Heritage\, strengthening of early warning systems\, considering the most recent scientific data on the impacts of climate change. It is essential to confront these challenges and foster a collective effort to preserve and protect our shared cultural legacies in the face of a changing climate. \nThe conference is organised by VSF\, in collaboration with CORILA\, The European House – Ambrosetti\, Consorzio Venezia Nuova and Vela\, with the support of Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Procuratoria di San Marco\, as part of the “Biennale della Sostenibilità – The MOSE Era”\, a series of initiatives promoted by VSF aimed at establishing Venice as a global reference point in climate change adaptation strategies.

SUMMARY:2ND VENICE SUSTAINABLE FASHION FORUM
DESCRIPTION:The second Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum stands as a beacon of innovation and reflection in the vast landscape of sustainable fashion. This forum is a not to be missed appointment as Side Event of the Sustainability Biennial 2023 – The MOSE Era for those who wish to critically analyze the present and future of sustainable fashion. Now in its second edition\, the Forum has quickly established itself as the annual reference event for exploring the challenges of sustainability in the fashion world. \nFashion is a crucial sector in the transition to a sustainable future\, and the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum aims to become the meeting place for institutions\, nongovernmental organizations\, brands\, industry and business professionals\, opinion leaders\, and key players in sustainable change. The first edition demonstrated the importance of bringing these diverse stakeholders together to identify priority challenges\, outline a shared vision of change\, and initiate action based on verifiable scientific data. \nOne of the key challenges is measuring the global impact of the fashion industry\, made complex by the lack of comparable data. However\, the European Union has stipulated that fashion and luxury companies must make public their quantitative sustainability performance starting in 2023 or 2024 at the latest\, highlighting the importance of sustainable transition. In particular\, Italy\, with more than 500\,000 workers in the industry\, is a focal point in this initiative. \nThis second edition of the Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum is the essential event for those who embrace sustainable fashion and aspire to contribute to a better future for this crucial industry. \nFor more information: https://www.ambrosetti.eu/venice-sustainable-fashion-forum/ \nTo view the event program click here.

SUMMARY:Venezia e la scienza\, due secoli di sostenibilità
DESCRIPTION:The urban transformation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, driven by scientific and technological progress\, shaped European cities. This metamorphosis involved all aspects of city life\, from infrastructure to mobility\, from social services to economics\, from sanitation to residency. Even Venice\, with its unique configuration\, was not immune to these transformations\, which gave birth to a modern city in an original way\, while maintaining its distinctive characteristics and peculiarities. \nThe exhibition\, “Venice and Science: Two Centuries of Sustainability in the City of Venice\,” organized by the Istituto Veneto di Lettere\, Scienze ed Arti together with the Fondazione Venezia Capitale Mondiale della Sostenibilità / Venice Sustainability Foundation within the framework of the Biennale della Sostenibilità 2023 – L’Era del MOSE\, offers a compelling account of how scientific and technological progress has sought to place itself at the service of the city\, ensuring that it was not excluded from the modernization process and thus rethinking the horizons of its social and cultural life.\nMore than 80 pieces are on display\, about 300 of them can be explored through an immersive installation; a real journey through documents: engravings\, drawings\, photographs\, maps\, models\, measuring instruments and projects-sometimes put into action\, sometimes remaining only imagined or partially realized. \nThere are many curiosities unknown to most that\, thanks to a careful work of collection and analysis of a great deal of material by the Istituto Veneto di Lettere\, Scienze ed Arti\, come out of the archives and are offered to the public as evidence of a strong push for change that represents an invitation to rethink a period for Venice of revival and projection towards a future of great creativity and modernization. \nThe exhibition will be open daily from Oct. 7 to Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Palazzo Loredan\, Venice. For more information see the website of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze\, Lettere ed Arti. \nTo accompany the exhibition\, the Istituto Veneto di Scienze\, Lettere ed Arti proposes the screening of three documentaries: \n\nWednesday 18 October\, 5.30 p.m.\, Itinerari di archeologia industriale by Roberto Ellero and Carlo Montanaro\nThuesday 7 November\, at 5.30 p.m.\, Quattro passi per Venezia by Francesco De Feo and Venezia città moderna by Ermanno Olmi introduced by Carlo Montanaro and Davide Terrin\n\nThe screenings will be held at Palazzo Franchetti\, Campo S. Stefano 2847. \nAdmission free subject to availability. Reservations are recommended by writing to accrediti@istitutoveneto.it.

SUMMARY:Balancing Port development and Lagoon preservation: achieving a sustainable equilibrium is already possible
DESCRIPTION:On September 21\, 2023\, the event “Balancing Port Development and Lagoon Preservation: achieving a Sustainable Equilibrium is already possible\,” a side event of the Bienniale della Sostenibilità 2023 – The MOSE era\, was held\, during which the results of the study “Channeling the Green Deal for Venice\,” a project of the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority\, were presented. \nThe project addresses the problem of the limited nautical accessibility to the ports of Venice and Chioggia by seeking scientific and operational solutions respecting the natural constraints\, the hydrodynamic balance of the lagoon\, the local water traffic\, and the MoSE mobile dyke system. These specificities required studies conducted with an innovative approach that can be replicated in other contexts\, integrating for the first time in Italy hydrodynamic and navigation simulation models in an iterative manner. \nDuring the event\, it was recounted how the evidence and technical-scientific data collected during the studies showed how it is already possible\, through targeted management and infrastructural solutions\, to increase port performance in terms of operability and navigation safety\, while reducing the effects of the transit of ships in the Malamocco-Marghera canal by more than 50% of the annual volume of sediment eroded by ship traffic. \nTo view the event program click here.

SUMMARY:Protecting coastal cities from sea level rise
DESCRIPTION:More than two-thirds of the world’s major cities are coastal cities\, vulnerable to sea-level rise and extreme weather events. \nThe aim of the conference is to deepen\, with an eye that embraces the entire planet\, the present and future sustainability of adaptation measures to the rise of sea level in the urban context; through a comparison with worldwide realities. \nThe event will showcase the protective measures implemented in Venice for historical buildings\, residential areas\, and urban spaces. It will encourage discussions and exchanges with other European cities\, emphasising the value of both spontaneous and institutional networks that develop among urban centers. \nMore information will be published soon.
